Do you get a handful, maybe a dozen days, like this in your life? When the stars shine for you, and problems both profound and petty melt away, and an extraordinary joy fills your entire being.
How often does that happen?
I got one of those days last weekend when my daughter Julia married David—the other David.
To not only see my child wrapped securely in a promise of mutual devotion and love, but also to look along the arc of her journey, across the hills and valleys, through tough times and triumphs, to arrive at this place, this moment, which is not a destination but a bright, new beginning.
Surely, this was the happiest day of their young lives. The brilliance of it was all over their faces, was in every gesture. And I’ve been telling everyone it was one of the happiest days of my own, much longer life. Of course it was. Nothing original there. Yet there are only so many days like this in any life, and when you get one, you savor it, you hold it, you never let it go.
