“And so we shall have to do more than register and more than vote; we shall have to create leaders who embody virtues we can respect, who have moral and ethical principles we can applaud with enthusiasm.”
Martin Luther King
Sadly for Martin Luther King, Jr., even the first part of his desire—to register and vote—is beyond reach. The second part about creating leaders who have moral and ethical principles seems pure fantasy. Republican-controlled state legislatures introduced hundreds of bills to restrict voting in the last year. More than 34 state laws were enacted that attack voting rights.
The pending Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is pretty much dead, destroyed by Republican power and fear-mongering. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), said it best when he claimed that “Marxists in Washington, D.C.” and “a leftist elite class” with a “radical progressive agenda” are behind the measures. Thank you for your insight, evil spawn of Joe McCarthy.
Yes, I’m a little bit down on our country.
